Kevin Costner is leaving the popular TV drama Yellowstone before the last episodes of season 5. This is big news for fans.
There was conflict between Costner and the show's production. Issues included disagreements over creative direction and his pay.
The main issue was scheduling. Costner's other project would be impacted by the filming plan for Yellowstone part 2.
In divorce documents, Costner wrote he expects to earn less in 2023 without Yellowstone pay. In a hearing, he said "It's disappointing to leave the #1 show on TV."
Costner said he will "probably go to court" over leaving the show. His contract included terms for how his character could be killed off.
The last episodes were delayed by a writers' strike. Now they won't air until November 2024, over a year after season 5 part 1.
Even though the original Yellowstone ends after season 5, the franchise continues. Existing spinoffs like 1883 will go on. Two more shows are ordered - a prequel and sequel.
Costner's exit marks the end of an era for the hugely popular neo-Western drama after 5 seasons. What's next for the franchise?
